A Brief Look at Pietá

One of the angels from Carlo Crivelli's "Pietá", from the John G. Johnson Collection in Philadelphia. I scanned this from The Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Tempera and Oil" portfolio printed in 1958. Note the look of emotion that's borderline-hysteria on the angel's face - this is characteristic of Crivelli's works. Some consider it overexaggerated, but personally I think that modern art enthusiasts could find more appeal in this, in an age where the subtleties in pieces are seldom noticed in comparison to the bigger picture (which in this case is the dead Jesus Christ that is the source of the angel's pain).
